Somehow, guys like this never get elected…

“When the tumult and the shouting die, when the bands are gone and the lights are dimmed, there is the stark reality of responsibility in an hour of history haunted with those gaunt, grim specters of strife, dissension, and materialism at home, and ruthless, inscrutable, and hostile power abroad. The ordeal of the twentieth century — the bloodiest, most turbulent age of the Christian era — is far from over. Sacrifice, patience, understanding, and implacable purpose may be our lot for years to come. … Let’s talk sense to the American people! Let’s tell them the truth, that there are no gains without pains, that we are now on the eve of great decisions.”

– Adlai Stephenson, 1952

Sick as a Dog…

There are two little slices of awfulness making the rounds of Seattle, and I caught one (or hell, both) of them.

It could be the Salmonella, or it could just be the damn super bug from the dark (in)continent, but the bottom line is it laid me out flat. Or fetal. Or whatever… I’m not really sure I remember all that clearly.

I had one of those fevers that shot up so fast, before I knew what was going on I was an extra in The Doors movie. You know what I mean, right? Val-Kilmer-as-Jim Morrison-in-the-desert-talking-to-an-Indian-mystic type s**t?

Piecing things together a couple of days later, I think I spent about 8 hours trying to wedge myself into the space between my TV and the wall so I could keep myself in the one position that didn’t hurt, and I mean hurt as in “home surgery with a soup spoon to remove entire abdominal cavity contents seems like a good idea right now” hurt. BLECCH.

When the fever finally broke, I was curled up in a ball behind the tv, with my head “pillowed” on a (rear) bicyle wheel, my hair caught in the cassette.

Just how far gone do you have to be for this to somehow seem like a comfortable position?

Denouement:

3 aspirin, glass of water, a little less hair, I curled up in bed and slept for the next 8 hours or so…

(profanity alert on the vid. You’ve been f-ing warned, m’kay?)

Awww yeah….

Lance coming back?

•August 31, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Blecchh.

Word is starting to circulate that LA is thinking about staging a “F-you, I’m clean, and always was” comeback to cycling.

This would be great for business; like it or not, more Lance equals more bike sales. Monetary interest aside though, I would  be sorry to see this happen. Cycling needs to navigate it’s sorry ass completely away from the EPO era, and LA has become synonymous with that time. For good or ill, whether he personally was clean or not, he ruled a filthy roost, and a large number of people will never believe that a clean rider was able to dominate a peloton replete with convicted dopers.

Best case scenario, LA comes back, passes every test imaginable, and cleans house. Everyone who believes he was doping “back in the day” will continue to believe it.

Worst case scenario?

I don’t even want to think about it…

.

Good luck, LA…

Self explanatory.

With extended family in New Orleans, news of the hurricane and it’s attendant mandatory evacuation leave me trepidatious, to say the least.

Let’s get it right this time, please? No more Nero-esque White House hyperbole, OK?

Week 1 in the books…

•August 31, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Well, week 1 of the ‘Cross season is in the books.

I’m beat; that was a looong week. My build period for cross always winds up becoming a kind of ridiculous trainer-bound 20 minute interval horror fest.

Here’s how it looked:

Mon: 2×20 minute intervals on trainer before work. Work. Jiu-jitsu from 6-8:30

Tues: 1×20, 1×15, 1×10 intervals on trainer. Work. Jiu-jitsu from 6-8:30

Wed: Meeting at work early.  Back home, work on computer for a couple of hours. 2×20 on trainer, pull bike off trainer and ride to gym. Jiu-jitsu 6-8:45

Thurs: 2×20 on trainer. Work

Friday: Trainer, 1×20, 10 seconds full sprint/30  seconds at 280w for 5 minutes. Pull bike off trainer, ride to jiu-Jitsu, roll from 11:30-1:00. Work. Then Barrier work for an hour or so.

Saturday: Ride to Jiu-jitsu. Roll from 11:30 to 1:00. Ride home. Nap. 3 hour road ride on x-bike.

Sunday: Drive to Portland to visit my mom, who’s “In town.”

That’s a rest day?

Sigh…

Conflicted? Me?

Marcelo Garcia is doing clinics in Olympia, WA the same weekend as Starcross and Radcross. Really, there’s no question – I’m not going.

Damn, though…

1st Cross practice of the season…

Ouch.

I haven’t lost a step, I’ve lost a leg.

Want a recipe for success? Roll Jiu-Jitsu for a couple of hours, slam down a smoothie on the way to work, find out your appointment is cancelled, go home, take a nap. Wake up in the late afternoon, and then try to hop over barriers for an hour without stretching.

I’m an idiot.

Not nearly as triumphantly an idiot as this guy, however…
